AI search optimisation in Morocco: be the source AI answers cite
AI search optimisation, often called GEO, makes AI answers more likely to cite and recommend your business: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. It extends your visibility beyond the classic results and builds on SEO: clear pages that answer questions directly, the same facts about your business everywhere, and mentions on sites the assistants trust. It is part of our normal SEO work, with no separate budget.

What GEO is, and how it relates to SEO
AI answers now sit above the classic results for many searches. When we checked 31 SEO-related searches from Morocco in October 2026, Google showed an AI Overview on 24 of them, and the next day on 69 of a larger set of 70, as our study of 70 searches shows. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answer the same questions in their own apps.
These systems build their answers from web pages and cite some of them. Google's own guidance says there is no special markup or file needed to appear in its AI features: a page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and the usual SEO practices apply. GEO is the part of that work aimed at being the page an answer is built from.
What makes a page more likely to be cited
- The answer firstA direct answer in the first lines, then the detail. Assistants lift short, complete statements.
- Questions as headingsSections that match the way people ask, in their words and their language.
- Facts with sourcesNumbers, dates, places and named sources rather than general claims.
- The same facts everywhereName, address, services and founder identical on your site, profile and directories.
- Structured dataMarkup that states what the business is, what it offers and where.
- Mentions elsewherePress, directories and sector sites that describe you. Assistants weigh what others say.
- Crawlers allowedA robots.txt that does not block the assistants you want to appear in.
- Kept currentPages updated when facts change, with the date shown.
Where each assistant finds its sources
Each assistant reaches websites in its own way, and only Google and Bing tell site owners anything. This is what each company documents.
| Assistant | Where its sources come from | Crawler to let in | What you can see |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's index | Googlebot | Impressions in Search Console's generative AI report |
| Gemini app | Not documented separately | Visits in Analytics | |
| ChatGPT | OpenAI's own search | OAI-SearchBot | Visits in Analytics |
| Copilot | Bing | Bing's crawler | Citations in Bing's AI Performance report |
| Perplexity | Its own index | PerplexityBot | Visits in Analytics |
| Claude | Anthropic's own search | Claude-SearchBot | Visits in Analytics |
| Grok | Not documented | Not documented | Visits in Analytics |
Visits sent to websites by AI assistants in Morocco, October 2026, by Statcounter: ChatGPT 47.7%, Gemini 40.4%, Perplexity 8%, Claude 2.8%, Copilot 1.1%.
How we measure it
AI answers change with the wording of the question, the person and the day, so no single screenshot proves anything. Only two companies give site owners figures from their own systems, and we report from those:
- Google: Search Console's generative AI report, open to all sites since 31 August 2026, gives the impressions your pages received in AI Overviews and AI Mode, counted together. Clicks from both stay in the usual performance report.
- Bing: the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools counts how often Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your pages.
- The others: ChatGPT, Claude and the Gemini app give no report. Their visits show in Analytics, and paid tools such as Ahrefs and Semrush estimate mentions from sample questions. We always say which figure is which.
Your monthly report shows the AI Overviews and AI Mode figures from Search Console. Some assistants also document their crawlers, which lets us check they can reach your pages.

What nobody can promise
No agency controls which sources an AI cites. Offers of a "guaranteed" place in ChatGPT or AI Overviews are selling something nobody owns. What we commit to is the work that makes citation more likely, and an honest report of where it happens.
Frequently asked questions
What is GEO?
Generative engine optimisation: the work that makes AI answers, such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Perplexity, more likely to cite your site. It extends SEO rather than replacing it, as our guide to GEO vs SEO explains.
Is GEO included in your SEO work?
Yes. GEO is part of our normal SEO work, with no separate budget line. The same pages are written and checked for one more place where they can appear.
What is a GEO agency?
An agency that works on how your business appears in AI answers: content structure, consistent facts, mentions on other sites and monitoring of the answers themselves. In practice most of the work overlaps with good SEO.
How do I choose a GEO agency?
Ask how they measure results and what they will change on your site. Be wary of guaranteed citations, private dashboards with scores you cannot check, and work that ignores your normal search rankings, since AI answers draw on the same pages.
Can I appear in ChatGPT answers?
You can make it more likely. ChatGPT's search draws on the web, so pages that answer questions clearly, consistent business details and mentions on trusted sites all help. Nobody can guarantee a citation.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to my site?
For simple factual questions, some people get their answer without clicking. For services, people still compare businesses and visit sites. Being one of the cited sources keeps you in front of them either way.
Is GEO different from SEO?
It is SEO with a different finish line. SEO aims at a position and a click, GEO at being quoted inside the answer. The foundations, an indexable site and useful, precise pages, are the same.
How long does GEO take to show results?
It follows SEO, because AI answers mostly cite pages that already rank. Clearer pages and consistent facts can be picked up within weeks of being crawled. Mentions on trusted sites take longer. Your monthly report shows how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, so you can see the change.
